A connection spanning thousands of years
In ancient times & mythology, the olive tree was considered sacred – in Greece, it was dedicated to the goddess Athena and symbolised peace, wisdom and endurance. A wish entrusted to an olive tree was considered a wish entrusted to time itself.
In Italy, particularly in Rome, plants accompanied by offerings were planted to mark new beginnings – marriages, births and alliances – and wishes were entrusted to the earth so that they could be nurtured by Tellus, the goddess of the Earth.
Among the Celts, trees were considered portals between worlds, and wishes were buried at the new moon. The growth of the tree was seen as a sign of whether the wish had been accepted.
In rural areas of Central Europe, notes containing wishes were placed beneath fruit trees – especially at weddings or when wishing for children, as the tree and its fruit were believed to help “carry” the wish.
