The Shepherd and His Olive Tree
A story of home, trust, and the roots of life. Every morning, as the first rays of sunlight touched the gentle hills of Portugal, an old shepherd named João led his flock out to pasture.
His path always took him to the same place: a magnificent olive tree that had stood there since João was a little boy. Beneath its silvery-green leaves, his grandfather had once rested. His father had tended the sheep there. And now João sat in the shade of that very same tree, listening to the wind and watching his flock graze peacefully. To João, this olive tree was far more than just a tree. It was a silent friend, a piece of home, and a living connection between generations. During the hot summers, it offered him shade. On rainy days, its sturdy trunk provided shelter. And every year, it bore those precious olives from which Portugal's golden olive oil was made.
One day, his grandson asked him: “Grandfather, why do you love this particular tree so much?” João smiled, placed his weathered hand upon the ancient bark, and replied: “You see, my boy, we humans come and go. But an olive tree remains. It holds our stories, our memories, and a little piece of who we are. When you protect an olive tree, you also give future generations a place to call home.” The boy looked up into the silvery canopy, gently swaying in the evening breeze. And in that moment, he understood that the most precious things in life are not those we own, but those we preserve.
